How to Cure Depression

Because it affects so many people, many wonder how to cure depression. Sometimes it is hard to combat those overwhelming and sad feelings, whether it is you or someone you love who is suffering. The most powerful way to combat depression is to become and active person. Also try to replace bad thoughts about yourself with thoughts that can lift you up and inspire you. For me personally, religion has helped me to gain a better perspective of who I am and how important I feel as a person.

Depression Signs

Signs of depression include lasting sadness that has no obvious reason, feeling that what you do isn’t good enough or that you are not good enough, excessive fatigue and lack of energy, no longer taking pleasure in things you used to enjoy, and thinking there is no hope. Very depressed people may think about or attempt to hurt or kill themselves. If you ever experience that, seek help from a doctor, psychiatrist or counselor immediately.

Causes of Depression
Depression can last a few weeks, months or years and can come and go periodically. It is common to feel depressed after a traumatic or tragic event. Many new mothers get “the baby blues” after their baby is born. Seasonal depression is common among those who live in the north where the winters are long and dark. Some people are able to get over their depression fairly easily while others may battle depression their whole lives.

Ways to Treat Depression
There are many ways to treat or cure depression and not everything helps every person. Many depression suffers find that a variety of activities gives them the most improvement in managing their symptoms and will proactively attempt to beat a bout of depression by taking action at the first sign that they are feeling blue.

Try all or some of these ten ways "how to cure depression".

1. Anti-depressants. Your doctor/psychiatrist can prescribe one of the several medications for depression and will help you determine if it is effective. Medication isn’t for everyone – sometimes it just doesn’t work. Be honest about how it is going, so you can get the treatment that works for you.

2. Counseling/Therapy. Work with a psychotherapist who specializes in depression and can provide either one-on-one therapy or group counseling. This can be very helpful, especially in conjunction with medication and other activities.

3. Go outside. Natural sunshine is a great mood-booster and helps your body get the vitamin D it needs. Adequate vitamin D is necessary to regulate hormones and for proper nervous system function. Even if it is cold and cloudy, just being outside can improve your mood.

4. Install full-spectrum lighting. Sitting under one of these lights for at least 20 minutes a day will increase your serotonin levels, which helps you have positive feelings. This can be especially effective for those who have seasonal depression.

5. Get a pet. Pet-owners are less likely to suffer the symptoms of depression than people who don’t own pets. Dogs are an especially good choice because they offer affection and companionship. Walking them is also a great chance for some exercise outside that can help improve your mood every day.

6. Give service. Doing something for someone else makes you feel good and helps you forget your own problems for awhile. Watching others cope with the challenges of their lives can make it easier to put things into perspective. Try volunteering in nursing homes, homeless shelters, animal shelters, food pantries or other local charities. Or help out a neighbor, friend or family member with grocery shopping, child care, yard work, house cleaning or some other task.

7. Do a hobby or activity you love. Maybe you have a favorite hobby you haven’t done in awhile or maybe in trying new things you will discover a new passion. Participating in something you love is a great way to combat depression.

8. Meet up with friends and family. Having a regular time to chat with a loved one, whether it is lunch, coffee, a walk in the park or even just over the phone, lets you talk over problems and anxieties before they start to feel unmanageable.

9. Keep a journal. Writing about your life, past and present, and your dreams for the future is a great way to focus on the good and work through the bad. Many people who suffer from depression have said that writing every day in a journal about positive things helped them stay upbeat and hopeful.

10. Spruce up your home. Excessive clutter can cause anxiety, so get rid of the all the extra stuff and put the rest of it neatly away. Decorate some of your rooms in your favorite colors or “happy” ones to create a cozy, cheerful place to be.
