Often times, when people are ready to buy a new-used RV they will go to their local dealer thinking they will get a deal just because they are not buying new. However, one of the best places to go is directly to the current owner (or buy one at an rv repo auction.). In general the price at a dealership will be more than an owner, and owners will sometimes want to get rid of their RV so bad they are willing to almost give it away. (Also see Repo Cars.)

There are a few different places you can find these deals. The first place to looks is in the classified section of the local newspaper. However, you don’t want to use the most recent paper, but start saving papers and call on listings that are at least a month old. Once the listing ages, the owner will be more likely to give you a deal. This same idea works for the local free or nickel classified ads paper that you can pick up at the local super market. Start picking them up when you go to the store and in a month or so you can start calling on these ads as well.

Another place to look is on craigslist.com. This is a popular place for owners to list online because it is FREE for them. You will have to sift through a lot of overpriced and so-so deals to find the great deal you are looking for. As with the newspaper, the older the listing, the more desperate the seller is generally going to be, so go to the oldest listings first. One nice feature of using craigslist instead of the newspaper is that you can do a search. So if you are looking for a Jamboree, you can type that in the search bar and they will all come out. You can also search within a given price range so you can narrow down the search options and save yourself the time.

On a little aside, before you make any calls to find out more, make sure you have an idea of what the market value is. You can do this by going to Kelly Blue Book or NADA online. Generally you’ll want to use the “dry” listing price (that is – don’t add any features in) so when you find out they have a satellite and solar panels added, you will have just gotten an even better deal.

The last place we will talk about here is actually the best place (that I have found) to really get some great deals on rvs for sale by owner. That is online listing sites. These sites reel owners in with all these great advantages of widening their market. They claim that people in California will be willing to drive to Idaho to make such a large purchase. This is true, but only if the RV is an EXCELLENT deal. So, many owners have had to sit on these listings for several months without even a phone call. I have found in my research that going through these online sites, most people were ready to move. So all I had to do is find an okay deal, but they were willing to take much less because they had become more desperate to get rid of it.

An easy way to find these sites is to google “rvs for sale by owner” or something of that nature. Start browsing through sites, look for local listings first, but if you find a really great deal, perhaps you would be willing to drive across a state line or two.

I hope these simple ideas help you in your hunt. I know I have found several amazing deals using these techniques and I’m sure you will too. Good luck!
